Why is there a need for the Capital Pride In response to Whitman-Walker Clinic’s (the Clinic) announcement that it was interested in transferring responsibility for managing and producing Capital Pride, a group of member of the Capital Pride Planning Committee formed the Capital Pride Alliance, Inc (the Alliance). The Alliance is a non-profit, non-partisan, service organization that is incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia and was established to successfully support, plan, implement, and assess the annual Capital Pride events and related activities throughout the year, beginning in 2009. Alliance members are all active members of the Capital Pride Planning Committee who bring knowledge, expertise, diverse representation, and a strong commitment to ensuring a successful transition and sustained growth for Capital Pride in the years and decades ahead. Because of its roots and unique perspective, the Capital Pride Alliance is guided by the core values and beliefs of the Capital Pride Planning Committee, including: diversity; inclusivity; transparency; and What is the structure of the Capital Pride Alliance? The Capital Pride Alliance, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors, with 11 members, including four officers. This self-perpetuating board, initially comprised of active members of the Capital Pride Planning Committee, will expand to include additional members immediately following the transition phase, should the Clinic select the Alliance to administer and run Capital Pride. Currently, the Alliance Board is a working board comprised of community members who possess specific skills and expertise to ensure a seamless transition and start-up of the organization. Ultimately, the Board members will not be involved in the daily or regular execution of Pride events, but serve as stewards, on behalf of the community, for Capital Pride. What are the duties of the Board of Directors? The Board will have three critical responsibilities: set strategic direction for the Alliance; provide fiduciary oversight; and select, manage, and annually evaluate the Executive Director. The members of the Capital Pride Alliance, Inc. believe that Capital Pride's corporate structure must be independent to avoid fiscal, legal, and programmatic conflicts. Our experiences have taught us that Capital Pride needs to be operated by an entity that is community based, sole-focused, and independent. The Alliance provides organizational safeguards built into our board and leadership structure to ensure that our community partners and volunteer members continue to have a direct impact on the production and preservation of Capital Pride.
